Port Moresby Liaison Office was established in 1973 and currently assists Head Office in the following four main business activities.

Energy

Di-Methyl Ether (DME)/Methanol Petrochemical Project This project is being promoted by JDME, a company formed by ITOCHU Corporation, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, JGC and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The annual production capacity is 1.2m tons of DME and 700,000 tons of methanol and the current schedule is production to commence at the earliest 2011. The photo is of the construction of the DME pilot project located in the Niigata Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company petrochemical plant.

Automobile

ITOCHU supplies Mitsubishi vehicles to the Papua New Guinea market through authorized dealer, Boroko Motors, which buy the Mitsubishi vehicles from ITOCHU Corporation.

Tuna

ITOCHU is one of the major buyers of South Pacific Tuna and it charters carrier boats to Papua New Guinea and other South Pacific Island countries to load tuna from tuna catching boats.

Official Development Assistance (ODA)

ITOCHU assists the Papua New Guinea Government to identify, design and prepare the request letters for projects to be submitted by the Papua New Guinea Government to the Japanese Government for possible ODA funding either by grant aid or yen loan by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). Once funded by the Japanese Government, if the project is for the supply of equipment, the company bids for the supply and installation contract. However, if it is a construction project, the company assists Japanese construction companies to bid for the contract. The latest project will be the Port Moresby Sewerage Project to be funded by a yen loan from JBIC of about USD80m. The main components are the supply and laying of sewerage pipes and the supply and installation of sewerage pumping stations and treatment plant.
